Bearing choice

Loads

A load is a force applied to the bearing. The application, and hence the load applied to the bearing, determines the type of bearing used. Bearing qualities differ.

There are two types of load:

Radial load applied on a bearing

Radial load
Load applied perpendicular to the shaft axis

Example: rolling gantry muffle

Axial load applied on a bearing

Axial load
Load applied parallel to the shaft axis

Example: drill

In some applications, the two loads are combined.

Combined loads applied on a bearing

Combined loads
Radial  load + Axial load

Example: car wheels
